スコットランド最北の地『シェトランド諸島』で綴る光と生命への賛歌、加藤秀「Shetland in the Light」展

大小およそ100 の島々からなるシェトランド諸島は、スコットランドの最北に浮かんでいる。シェトランドでは、高緯度であることと年中吹き荒ぶ強風のため、木はほとんどと言っていいほど生育しない。地を覆っている草々は、風で飛ばされないよう大地にしっかりとしがみついていた。
シェトランドはその立地上、英国よりもノルウェーなど北欧諸国からの影響を多大に受けてきた。かつてのバイキングの末裔たちは、今この美しい島に暮らしている。
私は最大の町ラーウィックに滞在し、陸続きの島は車で、離れた島へはフェリーや小型飛行機で渡り各地を訪れた。
一日のうちに全ての季節があると言われるこの地方は、まさしく（時には1 時間のうちに）たちまち雲に覆われ大粒の雨と落ち、風が身体を叩きつけ、ふたたび穏やかな光陽に照らされた。私は荒野を踏みしめ、丘を登り平原を越え、羊や馬や牛たちの牧場を進み、断崖絶壁に打ち寄せる十数メートルの波を目の当たりにし、そしてこの島々に暮らす人々と出会い、その感動の多くを出来る限りフィルムに収めようと努めた。
これらの写真たちはその記録であると同時に、厳しい自然の中で生きるあらゆる生命たちの光と生への希求を見つめ、そして自身の胸に問いかけた旅の記録でもあった。私はその答えの一端をスコットランド最北の地であるシェトランド諸島に探し追い求めた。
The Shetland Islands consist of about 100, large and small islands, in the northernmost part of Scotland. In the Shetland Islands, trees do not grow at all due to high latitude and strong winds all year round. The plants grow, but the plants cover the ground as if they were clinging to very life itself. Because of its location, Shetland is much more influenced by Nordic countries such as Norway than in the UK. They are the descendants of the Vikings.
I stayed in the largest town of Lerwick, traveled by land and on to remote islands by ferry and by small plane.
In this region, experiences all seasons in one day, sometimes it can be immediately covered with clouds in a very short time, then heavy rains fall. The rain, and the wind jostle the face, until the gentle sunshine shines again. I travel in the wilderness, climb hills, crossed fields and plains, walked amongst sheep, horses and past cattle farms, witnessed waves a dozen meters high that gentty caress the cliffs, and met the people who live and survive on these remote islands. I try to show my impression and passion for these islands through these photographs as much as possible.
These images are not just memories but also chronicles of a journey that wish for the light and desire for all life in this harsh, severe, stark enviroment. I searched and discovered many answers in these isolated northernmost Shetland Islands.
